Occupational Health Nurse Education


There is no legislative requirement for Occupational Health Nurse education.

The Danish Nurses Organisation (DNO) in cooperation with The University College Copenhagen (UCC) is responsible for organising and promoting the education.

The first course is to be held in 2010.

The education is on part time basis, and consists of 6 modules. 2 of the modules are assigned to Health Promotion and prevention with focus on the working environment and working climate.

The duration of the course is 12 weeks, equivalent to 20 hours per week.

Classroom lecturing is 7 days followed up by individual and group work, supervision and a final examination. The course merits 9 ECTS points.

Criteria for eligibility:

4 years post registration experience including work experience of teaching and/or project management. The Diploma of Education from the Danish College of Nursing is an advantage.


The individual modules award competency and can be taken separately. The completion of all modules results in the qualification Health Professional Diploma

Brief description of the 2 modules specifically related to Occupational Health Nursing

Module 1.
Health Promotion and prevention at the workplace

  • The role and functions of the OHN according to project management
  • The role as a consultant and involvement as a method
  • Project management, about the process from working environment problem to project
  • Epidemiological definitions and their utility
  • Communication (mostly in own organisation with a special focus on the dialog with managers)
  • Methods of research and development relevant to working environment and working climate


The module is finished by producing a synopsis as a group work followed by an individual examination


Module 2.
Health Promotion and prevention for selected risk groups with focus on the working environment and working climate

  • Differentiating groups at risk on different evidence based perspectives and epidemiology
  • Political strategies Working environment and health promotion
  • Theories, models, classifications and survey methods
  • Perspectives on networking and intervention in different areas
  • Information, communication and cooperation in relation to health promotion and prevention with focus on the working environment og working climate
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation and society based possibilities to react with health promoting and preventing activities in relation to the working environment and working climate

The module concludes with the submission of a written project and an oral examination This can be either individual or group work
